Hello dev.java team!
I write regarding content that just went out of date on the excellent "Getting Started with Java Certification" tutorial, https://dev.java/learn/java-cert-overview/ (archived as is at: https://web.archive.org/web/20260508180237/https://dev.java/learn/java-cert-overview/ ).
This certifications article added in #31 does not yet mention the Java 25 certification exam, which is now available (see bottom of this issue comment for links and images).
Specifically, re: the section:
What certification exams are available?
There are currently five active Java certification exams.
[should already say "at least six exams" as previously requested in an earlier ticket]
Should probably be updated to say there are currently "at least seven Java certification exams".
Then the listing of exams, which currently starts:
- 1Z0-830: Java SE 21 Developer Professional exam - 50 questions in 120 minutes, passing 68% - For Java 21; =the most recent certification exam available.
- 1Z0-829: Java SE 17 Developer exam - 50 questions in 90 minutes, passing 68% - For Java 17.
- 1Z0-819: Java SE 11 Developer exam - 50 questions in 90 minutes, passing 68% - For Java 11, the exam was launched in two parts like Java 8 (1Z0-815 and 1Z0-816). It was consolidated into a single exam, the 1Z0-819.
Should probably be updated to begin with:
- 1Z0-831: Java SE 25 Developer Professional exam - 50 questions in 120 minutes, passing 68% - For Java 25; the most recent certification exam available.
(And in the existing Java 21 line "=the" should be "the"; and the URLs for exams that begin with "java-ee-7-application-developer" may have newer, more relevant URLs available that might be preferred.)
Then the line:
Most people start with the 1Z0-830 (the latest) or the 1Z)-811 (if you want to get an easy certification faster and build on it) It is very important to use study materials that match the exam you are studying for. As a result, those who hold Java 17 materials target the 1Z0-83=29 exam.
(Note my previous ticket noting it was showing Java 17 this year in 2026 long after the Java 21 exam came out in 2024 did not include the typos of extra "=the" or "=29" , etc.)
Should be updated to:

Then, the "Should I wait for Java 25?" section can probably be removed as there is no LTS after Java 25 to wait for an exam to be released for.
Under "What is covered?",
For example, exam objectives covered in Java 21 ones are:
should be updated to say "Java 25 ones are" and copy the list from https://mylearn.oracle.com/ou/exam/java-se-21-developer-professional-1z0-830/105037/139080/220555 .
Under "How to study for the Java 21 certification?",
If you subscribe to Oracle University, there is a 40+ hour video class.
can be updated to:

The link to the Sybex book by Jeanne Boyarsky (the article author) can be updated to their new Java 25 version which has a placeholder at https://www.amazon.com/Oracle-Certified-Professional-Developer-Study/dp/1394434278 .
The link to the Enthuware study materials can be updated to https://enthuware.com/oca-ocp-java-certification-resources/297-ocp-java-25-exam-syllabus until their full materials are released for Java 25 as they had already prepared a preparation page speculating on the exam contents before it was released.
Note, there is an open PR with a somewhat misleading title that refers to mentioning Java 25 as upcoming instead of Java 21, not updating the article yet to support Java 25 as the main / latest exam:
There is an open PR #202 titled "Revise Java certification overview for Java 25" but consistent with the branch name which is java-21-cert at this time, the open PR only includes the changes to target Java 21 as current and mention Java 25 as upcoming consistent with my earlier ticket #201 ; the changes were pushed live by Jose before the PR has submitted.
(See also my earlier ticket #201 for update from Java 17 to Java 21 , article in that case was a couple of years out of date, right now 25 JUST came out, but still may be useful to notify).
Links to Java 25 certification pages and screenshots:
Of course your team may want to just update the "Should I wait for Java 25" section and wait to recommend it over 21 until more test preparation material has been released, but I do think Enthuware will be very fast as they will likely just add a couple of sections to their existing Java 17 + 21 combined book and re-release it.
Thanks to your team and site I obtained the Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE 21 Developer credential ( https://catalog-education.oracle.com/ords/certview/sharebadge?id=54572D8F73F8F2E3F6CD22925E86958C3EDDAB4D5D16F5B2FC0A929DA9C7FFB1 ). Hopefully by continuing to use this site, the recommended Enthuware material, the official Oracle documentation, and the Oracle course, I will be able to also obtain the Java SE 25 Professional Developer credential.
Thanks very much for all this excellent content!
