Hello dev.java team!
I write regarding out of date content on the excellent "Getting Started with Java Certification" tutorial, https://dev.java/learn/java-cert-overview/ (archived as is at: https://web.archive.org/web/20260302011533/https://dev.java/learn/java-cert-overview/ ).
This certifications article added in #31 first became out of date back in 2024 July (writing in 2026 now), as in 2024 the SE 21 professional developer exam and course came out from Oracle, while this article still says SE 17 is the latest (see "Announcing Oracle Certified Professional Java SE 21 Developer Exam and Java SE 21 Programming Complete Course" (archived at: https://web.archive.org/web/20260302013649/https://blogs.oracle.com/oracleuniversity/announcing-oracle-certified-professional-java-se-21-developer-exam-and-java-se-21-programming-complete-course ) which includes live course and exam links).
Specifically, the section:
What certification exams are available?
There are currently five active Java certification exams.
Should probably be updated to say there are currently "at least six Java certification exams".
Then the listing of exams, which currently starts:
- 1Z0-829: Java SE 17 Developer exam - 50 questions, passing 68% - This Java 17 is the most recent certification exams available.
- 1Z0-819: Java SE 11 Developer exam - 50 questions, passing 68% - For Java 11, the exam was launched in two parts like Java 8 (1Z0-815 and 1Z0-816). It was consolidated into a single exam, the 1Z0-819.
should probably be updated to insert a new "1." listing at the top:
- 1Z0-830: Java SE 21 Developer Professional exam - 50 questions, passing 68% - This Java 21 exam is the most recent certification exam available.
with the "2." listing being set to Java SE 17, updating the existing text to no longer mark it as the "most recent certification exam".
Then, the "Should I wait for Java 21?" section, can probably be removed entirely or updated to reference the next LTS.
The "What is covered" list after "For example, exam objectives covered in Java 17 ones are" can probably be updated with a copy of the bullet points from Oracle on the exam objectives for the Java SE 21 exam, though it may also be fine to leave the Java 17 example as the section does not claim to describe the most recent exam.
The "How to study?" links can all be updated to the analogous SE 21 links ( SE 21 Video class / Learning Path , The Enthuware mock exams link for SE 17 can be updated to the Enthuware SE 21 mock exams link, I have confirmed they have it ready as I have purchased their new SE 21 mock exams myself.
Thanks very much for these resources. I purchased the Oracle courses, but I would not have found out about the Enthuware mock exams without this article.
