Hey everyone!
Today (well, technically yesterday, but we try not to work on our weekends!) marks the third anniversary of the release of Cassette Beasts on PC. What a milestone! We couldn’t have imagined that we’d end up where we are now back in 2020 when we first announced the game. As we approach the announcement of the next project from Bytten Studio, we thought it’d be cool to once again visit New Wirral with some new artwork, the first ever Cassette Beats comic, unreleased music and other fun goodies! This is a bit of an experiment from us (as well as stretching the definition of “zine”), but we wanted to celebrate with the community in style!
Art Gallery
To start us off, we collaborated with the incredibly talented community artist Vallahai on this mini comic, featuring Kayleigh and Eugene!

We also have new key art of Sunny, illustrated by Sami Briggs just for this zine! We chose Sunny as she’s the most recent partner character added to the game (in last year’s 1.8 update) and thus represents how much Cassette Beasts has evolved since release. You can download it in a few different sizes below!
We collaborated with the incredible illustrator CarmenFFLV, who’s style we’re a huge fan of, for this Aleph piece!

Artist Ally has drawn every beast on New Wirral at this point, and her work is very recognisable to members of our community. She was gracious enough to contribute this lovely illustration to the zine!

The Archives
For today’s celebrations, we dug into the past to unearth some of Cassette Beasts‘ unseen history. Each member of the team found some curios that we thought we’d show to the community for the first time!

Tom: 2020 was a big year for Bytten Studio: Lenna’s Inception released in January, the pandemic hit, and we shifted focus to our ambitious new project, Cassette Beasts. During this time, Jay and I were running down our bank accounts trying to find a partner to fund it.
We had some interest from publishers pretty early on (thanks Crema for showing success was possible in this genre!) but finding a match that shared our ideals was proving slow. So in May 2020, we released our early “reveal trailer”. The views, likes, and comments on that trailer, along with the wishlists on the Steam store page, proved there was a sizable audience for Cassette Beasts. And armed with that, it wasn’t long before we were signing with Raw Fury.
Announcing the game 3 years before release was a high-risk strategy. It meant that we had to keep interest in the game going for quite a long time, and we couldn’t do an exclusive reveal of the game at any major events. I don’t think we’d use this strat again if we can avoid it. The trend these days is to reveal not long before release – and for good reason.
The astute among you will have noticed that there are a couple of scenes in the reveal trailer that didn’t appear in the finished game. That’s because they were from the “pitch build” demo – one part of the information pack we sent around to interested publishers back in 2020. Today we’re showing off that demo for the first time:

Jay: There’s a lot of artwork in Cassette Beasts, and not all of it was drawn digitally! There’s several larger illustrations in the game, including the tapestry in the Amber Lodge and [REDACTED], that were real-life paintings scanned into the game! The largest of these, which appears at the climax of the game, is a big ink-on-canvas piece. I managed to find a photograph I took back when I first painted it!

I illustrated this piece in 2022 for the now-defunct (RIP) video game magazine Wireframe. It was very cool seeing a real-life game magazine cover for our game, especially as someone who grew up reading game mags!

Finally, I have this illustration from way back in 2020 that I designed as a T-shirt graphic for the rest of the team. You can tell that it’s a very early piece as it does not feature Candevil, Bansheep or even beasts like Sirenade, as they did not yet exist at this point in time!
Fun fact: the printed T-shirts I had made featuring this artwork were very low quality, and shrank to an unwearable degree pretty quickly!

Joel: Here’s a mixtape of a selection of music tracks from the Cassette Beasts cutting room floor, with some early demos of songs that did make it in.
You can hear where some tracks become others and where specific melodies or techniques ended up being used elsewhere. The was a heck of a lot of throwing things at the wall and seeing what stuck – some, I think, are actually pretty cool but just didn’t fit any particular context for the game. Enjoy this little peak into my musical doodle book!
Gift Shop
To celebrate the anniversary, our friends at Black Screen Records now have some brand new T-shirts based on our new Sunny artwork available to pre-order! As well as that, they’ve also reprinted (due to popular demand!) the Cassette Beasts soundtrack on cassette with a new set of releases. You can check the collection out by clicking the image below, or following this link!

Finally, we have another mailbox code for the community, as tradition. If you are unfamiliar, you can enter this at the mailbox in the player’s apartment in-game to recieve a free gift!
Once again, Cassette Beasts wouldn’t be what it is without you, the players. Thanks for an amazing 3 years so far!
