The rakaposhi Stream Cipher [chapter]

Carlos Cid, Shinsaku Kiyomoto, Jun Kurihara
2009 Lecture Notes in Computer Science
In this paper, we introduce the rakaposhi stream cipher. The algorithm is based on Dynamic Linear Feedback Shift Registers, with a simple and potentially scalable design, and is particularly suitable for hardware applications with restricted resources. The rakaposhi stream cipher offers 128-bit security, and aims to complement the current eSTREAM portfolio of hardware-oriented stream ciphers.

Postnatal sellar spine growth

2016 Medicine
A sellar spine is a bony spur protruding anteriorly from the central portion of the dorsum sellae. Its etiology is an ossified notochordal remnant of the cephalic end of the notochord. It is presumed to be a congenital malformation based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of sellar spine in a 4-year-old boy. A sellar spine should therefore be detectable at birth with or without ossification, and the posterior pituitary lobe should be displaced. Methods and Results: Here we review the
more » ... iterature and report the first case of typical sellar spine in an 8-year-old girl who presented with precocious puberty, but her MRI taken at age 4 months for a febrile convulsion did not show a sellar spine or posterior pituitary lobe deformation. T1-weighted sagittal images at 8 years old showed a bony structure protruding anteriorly from the central portion of the dorsum sellae. The length of this lesion was 3.8 mm on computed tomography (CT) scanning at 9 years old, and it elongated to 4.7 mm on CT at 12 years old. Conclusions: Based on the present case, we speculate that the sellar spine would be too small to detect early in development and would grow in size after birth. In this case, a sellar spine and precocious puberty were potentially associated due to deformation of the growing pituitary gland. Abbreviations: CT = computed tomography, LH = luteinizing hormone, MRI = magnetic resonance imaging.

Activity Ratios of Ra and Th Isotopes Leached from Euxenite

Kohta NAGAI, Yuichi KURIHARA, Jun SATO
2007 RADIOISOTOPES
The activity ratios of 224Ra/228Ra and 228Th/232Th in leachate from euxenite increased with increasing pH, while the activity ratio of 230Th/232Th decreased. The leaching behavior of 224Ra which is formed through four decay processes of 232Th, was different from that of 228Ra which is formed by a single decay of 232Th . Thorium-228, decay products of 232Th, was also leached more effectively than 232Th. However, 230Th which is formed through four decay processes of 238U showed different leaching
more » ... behavior from 224Ra and 228Th . Variation in the activity ratio of 228Ra/226Ra in leachate from euxenite sample in metamict state with pH of the solution in contact showed no apparent tendency and was observed to be almost as same as that in the euxenite sample partly because of so small activity ratio in the sample. The leaching efficiency of Ra isotopes and 228Th was estimated to be mainly dependent on the difference in the history of decay processes which have formed the nuclides. This estimation was consistent with the observation with the monazite sample reported previously.

For the purpose of evaluating the utility of CA19. 9 determination in transitional cell cancer (TCC) of the urinary tract, its serum value, tissue level and, immunohistochemical study, and follow up study, with high serum value were examined in 43 cases with TCC and 13 cases of control. 1. Serum values were 19. 1 U/ml in the control group and 198 U/ml in the tumor group. Though those of tumor were higher than those of the control group, there is no statistical difference between both groups.
more » ... cases with abnormally high value were observed in 13.7% of the control group, 13.8% of the bladder cancer, and 57.1% of the upper urinary tract cancer. 2. Tissue levels were 816 U/g wet tissue in the control group and 13, 000 U/g wet tissue in the tumor group, showing a significantly higher value (p<0.01) in the tumor group, statistically. 3. Immunohistochemical study were positive in 4.0% of the control group and 88.4% of the tumor group. 4. There is a significant correlation between serum values and tissue levels (p<0.05, r=0.483). 5. The serum values did not correlated with the staining property, tumor size, grade, and stage. 6. The tissue levels correlated with the tumor size, but did not correlate with the staining property, grade, and stage.

Speech pen

2006 Proceedings of the SIGCHI conference on Human Factors in computing systems - CHI '06
It is tedious to handwrite long passages of text by hand. To make this process more efficient, we propose predictive handwriting that provides input predictions when the user writes by hand. A predictive handwriting system presents possible next words as a list and allows the user to select one to skip manual writing. Since it is not clear if people are willing to use prediction, we first run a user study to compare handwriting and selecting from the list. The result shows that, in Japanese,
more » ... ple prefer to select, especially when the expected performance gain from using selection is large. Based on these observations, we designed a multimodal input system, called speech-pen, that assists digital writing during lectures or presentations with background speech and handwriting recognition. The system recognizes speech and handwriting in the background and provides the instructor with predictions for further writing. The speech-pen system also allows the sharing of context information for predictions among the instructor and the audience; the result of the instructor's speech recognition is sent to the audience to support their own note-taking. Our preliminary study shows the effectiveness of this system and the implications for further improvements. In this paper, we propose predictive handwriting to reduce the burden of manual writing for the Japanese language. The system predicts possible next words based on speech recognition and handwriting recognition, and allows the user to choose a desired word or sentence from a list to reduce manual writing. Prediction has been frequently used in typed text entry, but we are not aware of a previous system that has incorporated prediction for handwriting.

Decadal vision in oceanography 2021: Coastal oceans

2021 Oceanography in Japan
The future direction of Japanese oceanographic research in the next decade is discussed, mainly from a coastal oceanographic perspective. Coastal oceans serve two functions: (1) as a filter-reactor region connecting the open ocean and land, and (2) as a biologically rich and diverse region where environmental changes have a direct impact on society. Therefore, understanding the material cycle within the coastal region is important not only scientifically but also to preserve and maintain the
more » ... an. Process studies are needed, with close collaboration between physical, chemical, and biological science communities. Coastal oceans continue to lack observations to understand and resolve the small spatial and time-scale events that govern the region. However, advances in observational instruments/techniques, satellite measurements, and unmanned aerial vehicles are starting to provide high temporalspatial data than ever before. In addition to long-term monitoring, we discuss the research infrastructure and numerical models needed for future studies.

Intraoperative electromyographic (EMG) monitoring for protecting the integrity of the ocular motor nerves has been described by several groups.'-5 However, these methods so far have not been widely popularized, due to the difficulty and complexity of the procedures involved. We have reported elsewhere6 an electro-oculographic (EOC) technique for such a purpose, which is extremely simple and far more reliable. We describe here the details of our technique and discuss its efficacy for preserving
