When compiling a list of things people&nbsp;liked about our previous communication methods, it was obvious that&nbsp;<span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>Slack<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Slack<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform <a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/\">https:\/\/slack.com\/<\/a>. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at <a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/chat\/\">https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/chat\/<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span> was all of that and more, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open for everyone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Friendly user interface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easy asynchronous conversation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>iOS<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>iOS<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>The operating system used on iPhones and iPads.<\/span><\/span><\/span> and Android apps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Powerful customization abilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excellent search<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WordPress historically used IRC for its real-time communication, and is still <a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/support\/irc-support-channel\/\">where the real-time <code>#wordpress<\/code> support channel exists<\/a>. Once you&#8217;ve joined <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/\">wordpress.slack.com<\/a>, there is a&nbsp;#slackhelp channel to help members of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some tips for getting the most out of Slack:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"notifications\">Notifications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The default <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/account\/notifications\">notification settings<\/a> for Slack send you <i>everything<\/i>. You\u2019re going to want to switch to the recommended settings, which are for mentions and direct messages. You can also tweak these settings&nbsp;further, like setting specific &#8220;highlight&#8221; words and email preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"apps\">Native Desktop and Mobile Apps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slack has a great, fully-featured <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/\">web app<\/a>, native <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/slack\/id803453959?ls=1&amp;mt=12\">Mac<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/ssb\/download-win\">Windows<\/a> apps, and <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/slack-app\/id618783545?ls=1&amp;mt=8\">iOS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.Slack\">Android<\/a> apps. Preferences, conversations, and what you\u2019ve read are synced across devices. Access a list by typing <code>Cmd-?<\/code>. For example, <code>Shift-Opt-\u2191<\/code> (up or down arrow) to switch to the next unread channel. <code>Cmd-K<\/code> or <code>Cmd-T<\/code> is a \u201cquick switcher\u201d that allows you to jump to any channel quickly. <a href=\"https:\/\/slack.zendesk.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/201374536-Keyboard-Shortcuts\">More keyboard shortcuts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"commands\">Commands<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much like IRC you can use Slack commands in the format <code>\/command<\/code> where you start with a forward slash and then type the given command to perform an action. For example, <code>\/away<\/code> to toggle status, \/me to describe something you\u2019re doing, or <code>\/prefs<\/code> to open Preferences menu. <a href=\"https:\/\/slack.zendesk.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/201259356-Slash-Commands\">More commands<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trac-integration\"><span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>Trac<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Trac<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.<a href=\"https:\/\/core.trac.wordpress.org\/\">https:\/\/core.trac.wordpress.org\/<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Integration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slack has dozens of powerful integrations with other services. We\u2019ve already added a number of them, along with some custom tools using Slack\u2019s webhooks.&nbsp;Trac and <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>SVN<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>SVN<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>Apache Subversion (often abbreviated SVN, after its command name svn) is a software versioning and revision control system. Software developers use Subversion to maintain current and historical versions of files such as source code, web pages, and documentation. Its goal is to be a mostly compatible successor to the widely used Concurrent Versions System (CVS). WordPress core and the wordpress.org released code are all centrally managed through SVN. https:\/\/subversion.apache.org\/.<\/span><\/span><\/span> bots served the project well in IRC for years. We\u2019ve brought this functionality to Slack, and looks better, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you enter <code>#12345<\/code>, a bot helpfully prints that ticket&#8217;s <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>URL<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>URL<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website\u2019s URL www.wordpress.org<\/span><\/span><\/span> and info. It is not always a vertical column on the side. It can be a horizontal rectangle below or above the content area, footer, header, or any where in the theme.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Theme.
