Copilot Student entitlement not activated after Student Pack approval

Hi everyone,

Hello everyone,

My GitHub Student Developer Pack has already been approved and is active until May 2028. GitHub Pro was successfully applied to my account.

However, GitHub Copilot is still showing "Copilot Free" instead of the student Copilot entitlement.

I already tried:

• redeeming the Copilot benefit link,
• visiting the Copilot signup page,
• checking Billing & Licensing,
• logging out and back in again.

The Copilot interface still shows:

• "Copilot Free"
• and free-plan usage warnings.

Could someone please help refresh or provision the Copilot Student entitlement on my account?

I am facing the exact same issue here. My GitHub Student Developer Pack was approved, and GitHub Pro is active, but Copilot still shows as "Copilot Free" with the free tier warnings.I have also tried logging out, re-linking, and checking the billing settings, but nothing worked. Just to add more context to my previous comment: I am also unable to use the cloud agent features, which should be fully available under the Pro tier benefits that GitHub supposedly already applied to my account.Even though my profile displays "GitHub Pro", Copilot itself completely fails to recognize these privileges and strictly limits me to the free tier restrictions. It definitely looks like a synchronization/entitlement bug between the newly approved Student Pack and the Copilot service.

Thanks for sharing this. I’m facing the same issue too.
My GitHub Student Developer Pack is approved and GitHub Pro is already active on my account, but Copilot still shows “Copilot Free” and keeps giving free-tier usage warnings.
I also noticed that some Pro features, including cloud agent related features, are not working properly for me either. It really seems like there’s a sync/entitlement issue between GitHub Education and the Copilot backend after Student Pack approval.
I also saw GitHub’s notice saying that new activations for Copilot Student/Pro are currently paused, so this might be affecting many newly approved student accounts right now.
Hopefully GitHub staff can clarify the situation or refresh the affected entitlements once activations resume.

💡 New Activation Pause

The reason you are stuck on "Copilot Free" with strict usage warnings—even though your Student Developer Pack is active and your profile displays "GitHub Pro"—is not a sync bug on your account.

Following major structural plan shifts, GitHub officially paused all new activations for Copilot Student, Pro, and Pro+ plans.

When your Student Pack is approved, it automatically applies the repository benefits (unlocking the GitHub Pro badge on your profile). However, when the background script tries to downstream-provision your license to the separate Copilot billing service, it hits the global activation block. Because of this block, clicking the coupon or redemption link simply drops you back onto the basic Copilot Free tier.

🛠️ What You Can Do

Because this is an intentionally applied system-wide freeze rather than an account sync error, standard troubleshooting steps like logging out of your IDE or clearing your local OS keychain won't resolve it.

1. Rely on "Auto Mode" for Code Completions

While the pause on the dedicated Copilot Student plan block prevents you from utilising advanced cloud agents, third-party model selectors, or custom workflows, standard inline code completion remains fully active and unthrottled under the core ecosystem. Make sure your IDE extension is set to Auto Mode to prevent your local editor instances from locking up due to code-generation limits.

2. Do Not Cancel or Re-verify Early

Do not try to cancel your Student Developer Pack or try to force a re-verification workflow to fix this. Modifying your active student status while the activation channels are locked down can flag your account metadata or trigger an internal cooldown period, which will completely reset your queue priority when the provisioning systems go back online.

3. Monitor the Status Thread

GitHub's core admin infrastructure teams are handling activation queuing strictly through a master tracking ticket.
