Transductive Kernels for Gaussian Processes on Graphs [article]

2022 arXiv   pre-print
Kernels on graphs have had limited options for node-level problems. To address this, we present a novel, generalized kernel for graphs with node feature data for semi-supervised learning. The kernel is derived from a regularization framework by treating the graph and feature data as two Hilbert spaces. We also show how numerous kernel-based models on graphs are instances of our design. A kernel defined this way has transductive properties, and this leads to improved ability to learn on fewer

We demonstrate these advantages using synthetic data where the distribution of the whole graph can inform the pattern of the labels. Finally, by utilizing a flexible polynomial of the graph Laplacian within the kernel, the model also performed effectively in semi-supervised classification on graphs of various levels of homophily.

Disappearance of Anterior Cervical Corpectomy Cage

2019 Cureus
Although cage subsidence and dislodgement are not uncommon in anterior cervical spine surgery, missing cages have seldom been reported. This is the first report of the disappearance of a metallic corpectomy cage after anterior cervical fusion. A 63-year-old man, who had a history of ankylosing spondylitis and diabetes mellitus, was involved in a motor vehicle accident that broke his neck. The traumatic C6 burst fracture caused myelopathy and instability, which required surgery. He then

There was a significant improvement in neurological function after the surgery and he could ambulate independently. However, upon a visit at six months postoperation, there was dislodgement of the anterior cervical plate and cage. An attempt to revise the anterior fusion construct was made subsequently, but this surgery could only remove the plate. The metallic cage was left in place during the revision surgery because it was firmly incorporated into the C5 and C7 vertebra and could hardly be adjusted intraoperatively. There were no other interventions during the interval. Upon his visit at 23 months after the initial surgery, the metallic cage was missing. No examinations could locate the cage anywhere in the body, including 36-inch radiographs that demonstrated completely the disappearance of the metallic corpectomy cage. The posterior arthrodesis seemed stable and the patient had no dysphagia or any other gastrointestinal symptoms. The process of the disappearance of the corpectomy cage was never noticed by the patient and he remains free of symptoms to date. The complete dislodgement of a cervical corpectomy cage that was placed anteriorly could happen without symptoms. The cage might have been expelled during bowel movements and caused little problem. Failure to achieve arthrodesis in anterior cervical fusion, therefore, must be closely monitored.

Methanol Extract of Clavularia inflata Exerts Apoptosis and DNA Damage to Oral Cancer Cells

2022 Antioxidants
Antiproliferation effects of Clavularia-derived natural products against cancer cells have been reported on, but most studies have focused on identifying bioactive compounds, lacking a detailed investigation of the molecular mechanism. Crude extracts generally exhibit multiple targeting potentials for anticancer effects, but they have rarely been assessed for methanol extracts of Clavularia inflata (MECI). This investigation aims to evaluate the antiproliferation of MECI and to examine several
more » ... otential mechanisms between oral cancer and normal cells. A 24 h MTS assay demonstrated that MECI decreased cell viability in several oral cancer cell lines more than in normal cells. N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an oxidative stress inhibitor, recovered these antiproliferation effects. Higher oxidative stress was stimulated by MECI in oral cancer cells than in normal cells, as proven by examining reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial superoxide. This preferential induction of oxidative stress was partly explained by downregulating more cellular antioxidants, such as glutathione, in oral cancer cells than in normal cells. Consequently, the MECI-generated high oxidative stress in oral cancer cells was preferred to trigger more subG1 population, apoptosis expression (annexin V and caspase activation), and DNA damage, reverted by NAC. In conclusion, MECI is a potent marine natural product showing preferential antiproliferation against oral cancer cells.

Microtubules are heterodimers composed of α/β tubulin and make up the cytoskeleton. It plays an important role in maintaining cellular morphology, cell division, signal transduction and other processes. At present, six tubulin inhibitor binding sites have been identified. The inhibitors can be divided into two categories: a type of microtubule polymerization agent includes colchicine site, vinblastine site, maytansine site and prionetin site inhibitors; another category is paclitaxel and

With extensive research on tubulin binding sites and inhibitors, anti-tumor tubulin inhibitors will possess very broad clinical prospects.

2008 Proceedings of the 2008 ACM SIGMOD international conference on Management of data - SIGMOD '08
Online bibliographic databases, such as DBLP in computer science and PubMed in medical sciences, contain abundant information about research publications in different fields. Each such database forms a gigantic information network (hence called BibNet), connecting in complex ways research papers, authors, conferences/journals, and possibly citation information as well, and provides a fertile land for information network analysis. Our BibNetMiner is designed for sophisticated information network
more » ... mining on such bibliographic databases. In this demo, we will take the DBLP database as an example, demonstrate several attractive functions of BibNetMiner, including clustering, ranking and profiling of conferences and authors based on the research subfields. A user-friendly, visualization-enhanced interface will be provided to facilitate interactive exploration of a bibliographic database. This project will serve as an example to demonstrate the power of links in information network mining. Since the dataset is large and the network is heterogeneous, such a study will benefit the research on the analysis of massive heterogeneous information networks.
